Play Around The Light

Residential Space

The duplex apartment known as "Play Around The Light" is a stunning example of residential design that prioritizes both functionality and aesthetics. Designed by Chin-Shu Chen, this unique space showcases the designer's attention to detail and innovative approach.

One of the standout features of this design is the use of natural stone and wood to extend the main wall design of the living room, creating a visually striking focal point. With a height of 6 meters, the living room is injected with artistic syntax, drawing attention and creating a sense of grandeur.

The stairways connecting the upper and lower floors are located under the dining room, adding an element of surprise and intrigue to the design. The bottom of the stairway is adorned with sculpture artworks collected by the owner, turning the space into a gallery-like experience. The suspended stairway, combined with indirect lighting, shapes the artistic and exciting atmosphere of the space.

The open space between the dining and kitchen area provides a looping and circular flow, acting as a mediator that gathers the relation of the family members and allows the dwellers to perceive the meaning of space existence. This thoughtful layout enhances the interaction and connectivity within the home.

The design also takes into consideration the need for storage, with concealed storage spaces cleverly integrated throughout the apartment. This not only enhances the functionality of the space but also maintains a clean and uncluttered aesthetic.

The lighting arrangement in the duplex apartment is carefully curated to create the perfect atmosphere. The elevated structure provides multiple nodes and projections, allowing for a variety of lighting options and moods. The result is a space that is both inviting and visually captivating.

The project, which started in April 2017 and finished in December 2017 in Taiwan, showcases the designer's meticulous research and attention to detail. The integration of different materials, the use of open lines and dimensions in the ceiling design, and the overall circular layout all contribute to the natural concept of humanity that is embodied in this design.

"Play Around The Light" has been recognized for its excellence and creativity, receiving the Bronze A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category in 2020. This prestigious award acknowledges the outstanding and ingenious design that authentically combines experience and resourcefulness. It showcases the strong technical and creative skills of Chin-Shu Chen and contributes to the improvement of quality of life.
